Success Comes In Increments

You started this journey for a reason.  Revisit those reasons often.  Don’t lose why you started your journey.  The destination is impossible to reach without the journey that takes you there.

I learned something this morning…apparently today is “break your resolution” day.  This is the day that more people break their resolution on than any other day.  I’m not sure how scientific the study was that came up with this day, but it seems like a good day for a bit of encouragement!

When we are talking about creating new habits and taking on new ventures that are designed to improve our lives it is important to remember one very key thought: success happens in small increments.  We do not achieve overnight.  Even people and ventures that seem like overnight success stories have a long history that led up to that point where they were ready to burst on the scene.

We don’t lose weight in 3 pound increments.  We lose weight in tenths of ounces.  The moment to moment change is so minuscule that it seems non-apparent but your body is changing.  Looking back at 2 weeks may not give you a good picture.  But a few months of tiny increments will begin to show.  You’ll build momentum as your body and lifestyle adjust.

We don’t get stronger 5 kilograms at a time, we get stronger 1 gram at a time.  You’re not going to add a new plate to the bar each time you go to the gym but, if you persevere, you’ll begin to add those grams on each other. After a few months those grams turn into to kilograms and those kilograms turn into new adding a new plate.  But it won’t happen overnight.  It won’t even happen over a few nights.  But a month, a quarter, a year? Now we’re talking.

Look at any worth while resolution and you’ll see the same pattern.  Want to learn a new language? Take up a new instrument? Change your habitual thinking?  Develop a new skill? Don’t allow yourself to fall into the trap of seeking immediate results.  Be diligent, enjoy the journey, and celebrate the small victories.  It may take some time to see, but those small victories are the key to life change.
